Black Grouse

Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix)

Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix)

The black grouse is very distinctive with its black plumage, curved tail feathers, bright red wattles (red patches over each eye) and white bars on their wings which can be seen clearly when in flight. A breeding programme started on Arran in 2007 and electronically tagged males (blackcocks) were released in April 2009 in order they established their territories before the releasing of the females (greyhens). They nest in a hollow in the ground with little or no lining, and feed on buds, shoots, catkins and berries.
