Gannet

Gannet (Morus bassanus)

Gannet (Morus bassanus)

Gannets are the largest seabirds in the North Atlantic, with the nearest breeding colony to Arran on Ailsa Craig. They are around the coast of Arran all year, but most common in summer. Gannets fish by circling up to 30 metres above the sea then diving at up to 60 miles per hour as they hit the water, enabling them to catch fish much deeper than most other airborne birds. They are able to do this as they have no external nostrils and have air sacs under their skin in the face and chest to absorb the impact.
