Great Spotted Woodpecker
Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)
A striking black and white bird with a bouncing flight spending much of its time clinging to tree trunks and branches. It is a resident on Arran in Brodick Country Park, Merkland Wood, Sannox, Corrie, Glen Shurig, Glenkiln, Balnacoole and Shiskin. Its presence can often be heard by the distinctive drumming as it pecks the tree to announce its presence. A nesting hole is bored in soft or decaying wood. It feeds on insects, seeds and nuts.
