Nuthatch

Nuthatch (Sitta europea)

Nuthatch (Sitta europea)

The nuthatch is a plump bird with large head, short legs and a bluish-grey back and black eye stripe. It is a rare visitor to the Isle of Arran. It is usually seen in mature woods climbing on trunks and branches of trees, often upside down, searching for insects under the bark with its powerful bill. It also eats nuts and seeds, placing them in crevices in the trees and pecking at them. They normally nest in natural holes in trees or old woodpecker nests, lining it with soft materials, seldom travelling far from the woods in which they hatch.
