Osprey
Osprey (Pandion Haliaetus)
The osprey is a spectacular fish eating bird of prey with brown upper, white underneath and a six foot wingspan. It is an occasional passing migrant to Arran last sighted in Brodick Bay. They migrate to Africa in August/September arriving back in the UK in March/April. The nest is a heap of sticks, driftwood and seaweed built on rocky outcrops, in trees or on other suitable poles. It is the only raptor that can reverse its outer toe to grip its prey which it catches by plunging feet first into the water.
