Ptarmigan
Ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus)
The ptarmigan is totally white in winter plumage, except for its tail and eye patch which remain black. On Arran sightings are very localised, the last being on Beinn Tarsuinn in September 2008. Part of the grouse family it is a game bird spending most of its time on the mountains where it feeds on shoots, leaves, leaf buds, berries and insects. In extreme weather it may come down to the edge of forests.
