Red Squirrel

Red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris)

Red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris)

The red squirrel with its bright red coat, long bushy tail and white underside is an attractive and one of the favourite animals and protected in the UK. It is a breeding resident on Arran, where there are no grey squirrels that could carry the squirrel parapoxvirus that is fatal to the red squirrel. Most of their time is spent in the trees using their long claws to grip and powerful legs to leap, but they can also swim. They mainly eat the seeds of trees, stripping pine cones, and also eat nuts (especially hazelnuts, beech and chestnuts), fungi and berries. They nest in a drey made out of twigs in the fork of a tree and line it with moss, leaves grass and bark. Hollows in trees and woodpecker nests are sometimes used.
