Snowy Owl

Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus)

Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus)

The snowy owl is a large powerful owl which is a rare visitor to the UK, last being seen on the Shetland Isles. They nest on a mound or boulder in a scrape which has good visibility to their hunting grounds, abandoned eagle nests have also known to have been used. They primarily eat rodents, but will take juvenile ptarmigan as well as fish and larger mammals such as rabbits and squirrels, swallowing their prey whole and regurgitating what they cannot digest as compacted pellets.
